The truth of all things

A friend and mentor, Terry McCombs, once said to me after a voice lesson in his small farm cottage in Idaho, “I love your soul because you are a lover of light; a truth seeker”. His singing lessons with me consisted of 45 minutes of discussing all truth, any truth, and 15 minutes of singing. And in those 15 minutes my singing was more pure and honest, more accurate and exhilarating, than by using any other technique as taught by many other renown (and expensive) vocal coaches. I believe this is because, “…whatsoever is truth is light, and whatsoever is light is Spirit..(1), and…the Spirit knoweth all things (2)…he that receiveth light…receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day (3)”. Truth exists; even the truth about singing.

I accept all truth, irrespective of it’s source. Whether fond in a religious text, spiritual practice, science lab, or philosophical essay, I wish to seek and believe any truth. I accept the Judeo-Christian definition of an all-knowing, all-powerful God who is the Father and the Creator. I also believe there is truth to be found in all religions and sincere spiritual pursuits.

Truth can be known; I have learned how my belief can become more certain than hope. One teacher suggested knowing comes because the word of truth has “…swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your mind doth begin to expand.(4)”. And Jesus suggested a very practical approach to know for one’s self if His revolutionary ideas were based in truth: “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.(5)” However, the difficulty sometimes lies not in finding or recognizing truth, but in allowing the mind to believe what the heart and soul already know is true. Really, the best place to find evidence of truth – to conduct spiritual laboratory experiments – is within one’s own soul.
